On being human and caring…

We’re socialized to pretend we’re not hurt when we care more than others do. It’s called putting up a brave front, being tough. We’re taught, some of us are, to give – regardless of what we might get back. We’re taught that we shouldn’t expect anything in return.

That ethic is a good one. We should always do what we can because we care and we are able, not to get something back. But, do these cautions apply to the intangible? Do they apply to receiving a kindness in return? A word of encouragement when it is needed? A virtual hug? An “I know you’re there and I am with you in spirit?”

Is it wrong to feel slighted and sad when those kindnesses stop coming?
