NBC’s new problem: Chuck Todd | #Racism in Media on Blog#42

Meet the Press stepped way over lines that no journalist should cross without a consequence. If Brian Williams’ penchant for embellishment was a big enough infraction for NBC to take him off the air for a few months and not bring him back to the news division, then Chuck Todd, as the network’s political director, should be fired.

If telling a fib here and there merits punishment, then what Todd took part in merits the ultimate punishment for not only failing to maintain a standard of ethics on the job, but injecting a serious defect in personal ethics into it.

NBC’s most serious problem, as we’ve now found out twice, is that the network doesn’t seem to have an internal guidance system that checks for balance, or provides input on matters of ethics. There should have been someone on Todd’s team to put the brakes on running the segment. Failing that, there should have been someone above Todd, separate from the show, with the knowledge and authority to nix it.

Showing a segment with Black convicts talking about their experiences with guns, three days after the Charleston Massacre can only be interpreted as willful and racist reductionism of the same kind that is used by people who bring up Black on Black violence whenever police brutality is the topic of conversation. I am not allowing for any benefit of the doubt. The decision whether or not to broadcast this segment was revisited after the Charleston Massacre happened. Chuck Todd and his team decided to go ahead after weighing the pros and cons of “race and perception.” Clearly, the ramifications were well-understood. This is a racist behavior and it has no place in a major news network.

Then, while in conversation with the panel, Todd said:

Which leads one to ask oneself where Chuck Todd gets off being the arbiter of who can and cannot talk about race. White privilege is a serious problem. Todd needs to address it away from a TV camera.

Failures like this one, after Brian Williams’ suspension and return as an entertainer, don’t inspire confidence in the quality and trustworthiness of NBC as a news network.

The segment below is the last Meet The Press segment I will watch so long as Chuck Todd is an employee at NBC.

‘Meet The Press’ Shows Anti-Gun Montage Of All Black Shooters Following South Carolina Rampage | ThinkProgress

While the country — and South Carolina, in particular — is once again debating racism in America, NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday offered a video of men in prison expressing regret for their own gun violence. All of the men in the video are black.

The segment was part of Sunday’s show, which focused on the recent killing of nine black people at a bible study group in Charleston, South Carolina. The alleged shooter, Dylann Roof, is accused of making racist statements during the rampage and in an online manifesto that describes black people as “stupid and violent.” He has been seen in photos online holding a Confederate flag andwearing the flags of apartheid-era South Africa and white-ruled Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.

“The circumstances you are about to see are very different from the racist violence in Charleston,”Meet the Press host Chuck Todd said in the introduction to the video.“But their lessons remain important, and we simply ask you to look at this as a colorblind issue,” he said.

“The last thing we wanted was to cloud the discussion of the topic,” Todd wrote on the NBC website after receiving a wave of negative feedback on social media about the video.

  1. I can’t stand Chuck Todd, but he’s actually on your side in this subject; the wrong side.

Can you not have a single thought without interjecting a race filter? Black and white people all have made mistakes and have regrets for those mistakes.

We can’t ever ban guns in this country, but we can ban those who use them in crime. Let’s empty the drug offenders from our prisons. Give them a second chance. If they commit another crime while in possession of a gun; lock them away for a very long time. No plea bargains; no get out of jail free card. That will eventually end most gun crime, but it will never stop lunatics from acting on their evil thoughts.

  2. One last comment What gives A white liberal female the right to accuse other whites of racism? Please explain that in detail. You do it constantly
Explain to me why you can make all incompassing libelous statements about whites. I have repeatedly tried to factually refute you and Blow blocks it every time. You get away with spreading misinformation almost every column. How can you constantly imply you know exactly what peopld think or what their motives are? You are projecting what you think and not on any factual or relevant information
Why do you make all inclusive comments about whites being racists that include me? I have had enough of them and you need to stop NOW. I have told you it is offensive but clearly boundaries mean nothing to you

Do you know who these people?
    ) Harry Byrd
    2) Robert Byrd
    3) Allen Ellender
    4) Sam Ervin
    5) Albert Gore Sr
    6) James Eastland
    7) J William Fullbright
    8) Walter F George
    9) Ernest Hollings
    10) Russell Long
    11) Richard Russell
    12) John Stennis

They are the 12 Southern Segregationists who tried to stop the Civil Rights movement

Robert Byrd was a high ranking KKK member from West Virginia who became Senate Majority leader. Ernest Holliings became governor of South Carolina

By the way, FDR appointed a member of the KKK to the Supreme Court, Hugo Black. Comment?

Blacks still murder whites by a greater than 2 to 1 margin. (FBI Uniform Crime Reort Homicides. Table 6) Go back to 1990. I did and it stands true every year. According to the U.S. Census blacks comprise 13% of the population but commit 45% of all homicides in this country.
From 2002 to 2012. 465 white officers were killed in the line of duty n67 black officers. In 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010. There were more black offenders than white. Doesn’t this mean that a significant number of white cops killed by blacks?
I have nothing more to say to you people died and you politicize it. Fine I will just do what was considered an expert at work and do that. I don’t know why you push your blog. Do you think what you have to say is so compelling? No facts, broad statements, lots of projection and judgment
Try emailing Todd I have several times and he always answers. Very polite
Get rid of your hard. It consumes you
    Good riddance
