Dizzy Gillespie Quintet on BBC Jazz 625 (1966) | Blog#42

Dizzy’s genius as a composer, bandleader and soloist come shining through in this beautifully-restored high-quality recording.  While there are many clips of the tunes from this show on YouTube, this is the first time I’ve seen this restored copy of the entire show.

Dizzy’s playful sense of humor is legendary. Dizzy loved to joke on-stage and this performance has several examples of his playful relationship with the band, especially James Moody, who played with him in almost all the bands Dizzy lead, right up until he passed away.

Trumpet – Dizzy Gillespie
Saxophone/Flute – James Moody
Bass – Christopher White
Piano – Kenny Barron
Drums – Rudy Collins
