The media’s racist portrayals of #SamDubose and #SandraBland | #BlackLivesMatter on Blog#42

Here we are, finally seeing for ourselves what happened to Sam Dubose. It is horrific enough, but to have the media inject bias, racist bias, into the portrayal of victims who did nothing more than be, at the wrong place and time, is unbearable.

Sandra Bland was constantly shown in the worst possible light, even after it became clear that she had no business being arrested. This is how she really was:

The same is being done to Sam Dubose.

A kind soul, Matt Kick, contributed a simple fix on Twitter.

It shouldn’t take having ethicists in residence at the networks to produce decency…

The racism that pervades everything we see, hear, and do, is magnified and, at times, promulgated by the media. We need to make our voices heard and ask them to stop it.

It doesn’t take much to do the right thing. It really doesn’t.

  1. “It doesn’t take much to do the right thing” True, but one has to recognize the right thing first. It appears neither of the police officers involved in the traffic stops recognized the humanity they were prodding and I suspect it is because they had never or rarely seen it in themselves or in those with whom they were raised. Their manner no matter how controlled and polite clearly changed when their self perception of authority was questioned. It may seem trite, but I don’t think they were ever really loved.
