#HillaryClinton kicks out #BLM, #AUCShutItDown and… ? | #SocialJustice on Blog#42

Friday, October 30th was another one of those really odd days. Hillary Clinton, again, was able to display some of that really powerful white supremacist swagger and kicked out both BLM and a new consortium of HBCU student groups who use the hashtag AUCShutItDown, with hardly a peep from the usual vocal racial justice advocates.

While news outlets covered the attempt to confront Hillary, coverage was muted and oddly neutral, while print and cable pundits were oddly silent, some tweeting about shrimp crepes, but not a word about Hillary. By now, even those who kept claiming journalistic neutrality – as if opinion writers can even claim such a thing – have dropped all pretense and are obviously writing about Clinton in the most glowing of terms. Those who usually rail against Sanders and white progressives without ever mentioning Hillary Clinton continued as usual.

Clinton’s plan for racial justice seems to consist of calling for an end to racial profiling. Like many of Clinton’s proposals, such a call sounds good, but on a practical level, it’s one of those things that doesn’t actually fix the problem. Senator Sanders’ reaction is that Clinton’s proposal doesn’t go far enough. Sanders issued a comprehensive plan for racial justice months ago.

To put it mildly, watching this Kabuki play unfold has been more Moliere farce-like than drama. Everyone knows what’s going on but no one asks or answers the obvious questions. So, rather than waste bandwidth and explain the obvious, I am including the videos of the disruption and banishment without further comment.

Hillary Clinton Throws Out Black Lives Matter Protesters

Today, BlackLivesMatter protesters interrupted a Hillary Clinton event in Atlanta addressing race, protesting her support of the death penalty. The protesters were promptly removed from the facility.

While Clinton spoke at a campaign event at Clark Atlanta University, a group of protesters began marching across the floor, singing and clapping. While the protesters were singing, the pro-Hillary crowd attempted to shout them down, chanting, “Hillary! Hillary! Hillary!” The former Secretary of State tried unsuccessfully to silence the protesters, who say she hasn’t been vocal enough in her opposition to police brutality.

Hillary’s star-studded opening lineup, which included R&B singer Usher, civil rights activist and former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young, along with Congressman John Lewis, all unsuccessfully attempted to confront the protesters. AlterNet political writer Zaid Jilani pointed out the hypocrisy of Lewis and Young standing alongside a candidate who defends capital punishment — a policy that disproportionately affects people of color.

Black Lives Matter protesters interrupt Hillary rally | TheHill

October 30, 2015

Clinton supporters tried to drown out the protesters with chants of “Hillary!” and “Let her talk!”

The Democratic front-runner ignored the protests and tried to continue with her speech for several minutes.

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed went up on stage in a show of support to Clinton.

“Thank you all very much, I really appreciate it, and I appreciate the congressman and the mayor having my back,” Clinton said.

The protesters were eventually removed from the rally.

“So, I’m sorry, you know, I appreciate their passion, but I’m sorry they didn’t listen, because some of what they’ve been demanding, I am offering and intend to fight for as president,” she said.

Clinton was announcing her criminal justice reform plan, which includes a call to end racial profiling in law enforcement.

“Let’s remember that everyone in every community benefits when there is respect for the law, and when everyone in every community is respected by the law,” she said.
