Rest In Power, Prince | Tribute on Blog#42

Prince left as suddenly as he arrived. His star appeared at the highest point in the night sky. It will always shine, brightly.  He was a man of immense talents and a soul so deep, we’ve barely begun to comprehend.

Prince had a brilliance about him, one that can’t be categorized. He was the whole package and that package included absolutely everything, from visual to auditory, to subliminal, to philosophical, to conscious, to subconscious, to rhythmic, to emotional, to… All of it had a quality of effortless excellence. He was expression personified.

He was about what’s luscious and what is least ostentatious about life. He was both about excess and moderation. He was about intricacy and simplicity. He was truth. He was funk!

Prince’s brilliance has a quality, depth and originality that is often characteristic of those who’ve been struck by lightning. Prince disclosed in an interview that, as a child, he had Epilepsy.  It is known that  with the onset of epilepsy, some patients develop abilities they didn’t display before. I don’t know whether Prince’s epilepsy is what unlocked his gifts, but onset in my own child is what sprung hers forth, like lightning after thunder. I hope it isn’t lightning that took him from us all too soon.

As I came of age, Prince’s lyrics helped me crystallize some of my feelings into conscious thoughts:

I’m not a woman
I’m not a man
I am something that you’ll never understand

I’ll never beat you
I’ll never lie
And if you’re evil I’ll forgive you by and by

‘Cause you, I would die for you, yeah
Darling if you want me to
You, I would die for you

I’m not your lover
I’m not your friend
I am something that you’ll never comprehend

No need to worry
No need to cry
I’m your messiah and you’re the reason why

‘Cause you, I would die for you, yeah
Darling if you want me to
You, I would die for you

You’re just a sinner I am told
Be your fire when you’re cold
Make you happy when you’re sad
Make you good when you are bad

I’m not a human
I am a dove
I’m your conscious
I am love
All I really need is to know that
You believe

Yeah, I would die for you, yeah
Darling if you want me to
You, I would die for you

Yeah, say one more time

You, I would die for you
Darling if you want me to
You, I would die for you
Two, three, four you

I would die for you
I would die for you
You, I would die for you
You, I would die for you

This song has meant a lot to me over the years. At first, it was validation that to love is something you give in full, without condition or limit, and when real, the thing you can absolutely count on receiving, and in kind.

I would die for you  has been my solemn oath to myself and mine, that I will love better than I was loved, care more deeply than I was cared for, fight harder than I was fought for.

Prince’s light shone brighter and deeper than most.

Rest in power.
